Glycogen phosphorylase is catalyzes the rate-limiting step of glycogenolysis in animals. It converts glycogen to glucose-1-phosphate (G1P), which is subsequently converted to glucose-6-phosphate for glycolysis or to release glucose into the bloodstream. Glycogen phosphorylase mutations and dysregulation is associated with metabolic disease.
