DESCRIPTION

D-Mannitol, a 6-carbon sugar alcohol is produced by a range of  bacteria, yeast, fungi and plants. Mannitol functions as a carbohydrate storage molecule and osmoprotectant, and as a scavenger for reactive oxygen species. In humans it is largely metabolically inert making its osmotic effects most significant. Administered IV, it is not reabsorbed in the renal tubules creating a hyperosmolar glomerular filtrate, promoting rapid diuresis. In the gut, being poorly absorbed, it behaves as an osmotic laxative and diagnostic marker for intestinal permeability. AkrivisBio’s Mannitol Assay is a simple, sensitive means of quantifying mannitol in biological samples with a sensitivity below 1 nmol per well.
