DESCRIPTION
5-Lipoxygenase initiates the synthesis of leucotrienes by insertion of molecular oxygen into arachidonic acid, forming hydroperoxides which then rearrange to the final molecular forms. Leukotriene based inflammation is associated with asthma and allergies, obesity, regulation of fatty acid flux, atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative disease and cancer. 5-LOX expression levels and genetic variation of the 5-LOX gene can both play a role in these pathologies. Research on regulation of 5-LOX activity is an active field.
