Sialyltransferases are involved in post-translational modification, transferring a sialic acid residue from CMP-sialic acid to a terminal galactose residue of  glycoproteins and lipids. Such PTM’s are important for cell signaling, recognition, adhesion and the immune system. Abnormal expression is strongly linked to cancer development, particularly in aggressive, metastatic phenotypes of  ovarian, breast, gastric and pancreatic cancers. A number of viruses utilize a-2,3-linked sialic acid as a cell surface receptor for attachment and entry. It also detects a-1,6 and a-2,6 sialyltransferase activities.
