Pyridoxal 5′-phosphate, the active coenzyme form of vitamin B6, is a central catalyst in amino acid metabolism and influences energy production, neurotransmission, and one‑carbon/folate pathways. It forms a Schiff base with amino acids and serves as an electron sink to stabilize reaction intermediates, enabling transamination, decarboxylation, racemization, β‑ and γ‑elimination, and β‑replacement reactions. Low vitamin B6 levels are linked to elevated homocysteine, endothelial dysfunction, and increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. There are a host of conditions related to B6 deficiency, ranging from fatigue, impaired immune response, to seizures, peripheral neuropathy and anemia. AkrivisBio’s Pyridoxal 5’-Phosphate Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure B6 in a variety of biological samples with a sensitivity below 200 femtomoles per well.
