Glycolic acid is a byproduct of glyoxylate and oxalate pathways and participates in multiple metabolic processes, including ketone body synthesis and degradation, the citrate cycle, amino acid metabolism (particularly alanine, aspartate, and glutamate), glycine and hydroxyproline catabolism, with a portion coming from collagen turnover. It is a precursor to oxalate. Ethylene glycol poisoning is a result of glycolic acid formation. It causes severe metabolic acidosis, acute kidney injury and multiple organ dysfunction due to high plasma concentrations of glycolate, lactate and oxalate. Elevated urine glycolic acid is a sign of dysregulation of glyoxalate metabolism. Chronic exposure, including from beauty products can contribute to kidney stone formation. AkrivisBio’s Glycolic Acid Assay is a simple, sensitive means of assessing glycolate content, primarily in serum and plasma with a sensitivity below 30 pmol of glycolic acid.
