Laccase is a multicopper oxidase widely distributed across fungi, plants, bacteria, and some insects, which plays an important roles in both biosynthetic and degradative metabolic pathways. It is able to oxidize a wide range of substrates, including phenolics, coupled with the reduction of O2 to water. In plants laccase is crucial to the formation of lignin, a major structural component of plant cell walls. In fungi, the enzyme is utilized to break down the same lignin it was used to synthesize. Microbial laccases are used to improve the properties of biomass to be used in the production of biofuels. Laccases are also important for stress defense, sporulation, fruiting body formation and pathogenesis in fungi. AkrivisBio’s Laccase Activity Assay is a simple sensitive way to measure laccase activity in a wide variety of samples with a sensitivity below 10 µUnits per well.
