Mitochondria are double-membraned, membrane-bound organelles found in the cytoplasm of virtually all eukaryotic cells, including those of plants and animals. Their primary function is to generate ATP, the main energy currency of biochemical reactions, during oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondria are unique among organelles because they possess two distinct membranes: an outer membrane that encloses the organelle and an inner membrane that is highly folded into structures called cristae which increase the surface area for ATP production. Inside the inner membrane lies the mitochondrial matrix, a viscous fluid containing enzymes, ribosomes, inorganic ions, mitochondrial DNA, and other molecules essential for mitochondrial function. Mitochondria perform other functions besides energy production, including calcium homeostasis, regulation of cell metabolism, mediating cell growth, differentiation and apoptosis, synthesis of some hormones, detoxification of ammonia and heat generation. AkrivisBio’s Mitochondria Isolation Kit offers a simple choice of procedures. One, a reagent based procedure permits processing of multiple samples simultaneously. The other utilizes homogenization which can provide a higher yield of mitochondria.
