DESCRIPTION

Sphingomyelin, present in animal cell membranes, particularly within the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells, is an important structural lipid. It has roles as a structural component is involved in signaling and in lipid homeostasis. Sphingomyelin and its metabolite ceramide are involved in diverse cell functions including endocytosis, ion channel regulation, protein sorting, apoptosis and signaling cascades. High plasma levels of sphingomyelin are associated with cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. Its accumulation in plaque cells contributes to inflammation and lipoprotein aggregation. AkrivisBio’s Sphingomyelin Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure sphingomyelin in a variety of biological samples with a sensitivity below 1 nanomole per well.
