DESCRIPTION

Phosphoglucomutase (PGM) plays a key role in carbohydrate metabolism, reversibly interconverting Glucose-1-Phosphate and Glucose-6-Phosphate. This interconversion directly connects the pathways of glycogen synthesis and breakdown to the central metabolic pathways of glycolysis and gluco- neogenesis. Glycogen breakdown results in the formation of G1P which cannot enter glycolysis directly. PGM converts it to G6P enabling further utilization for energy production. Conversely, G6P formed during glucose uptake cannot be directly utilized in glycogen synthesis, so PGM acts as the bridge between them. Due to its central role in carbohydrate metabolism, dysregulation and deficiency of PGM results in a wide range of physiological conditions involving muscles, liver, cardiomyopathies, coagulant disturbances and glycosylation anomalies. AkrivisBio’s PGM Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive way to quantify PGM activity in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity below 1 mUnit per well.
