Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is the predominant phospholipid in eukaryotic membranes and plays a central role in cellular and whole‑body metabolism. It is a major structural determinant of bilayer integrity and curvature, constraining the activity, trafficking, and turnover of membrane proteins that mediate transport, signaling, and energy metabolism. The PC/phosphatidylethanolamine molar ratio in membranes strongly affects biophysical properties such as fluidity, packing, and curvature stress, which in turn affect organelle function, particularly in the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria. Disturbances in PC synthesis or remodeling alter lipid droplet formation, mitochondrial oxidative capacity, and ER stress responses, contributing to insulin resistance, non‑alcoholic fatty liver disease, and broader features of the metabolic syndrome. AkrivisBio’s Phosphatidylcholine Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure phosphatidylcholine in a variety of biological samples with a sensitivity below 100 picomoles.
