DESCRIPTION

Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) is a family of enzymes that produce nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine, important for several physiological  processes, including neurotransmission, vascular tone, and the immune response. NOS catalyzes an unusual five-electron oxidation of arginine, forming NO and L-citrulline. There are three main NOS isoforms of NOS, neuronal (nNOS), endothelial (eNOS), and inducible (iNOS). nNOS is calcium and calmodulin-dependent and produces NO in the central nervous system. eNOS, also calcium and calmodulin-dependent, produces NO in blood vessels and regulates vascular tone. iNOS is expressed in response to inflammatory stimuli and produces large amounts of NO as a part of the immune response. AkrivisBio’s Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive method of measuring NOS activity in different biological specimens, with a sensitivity below 5 µUnits per well.
