Nitric oxide (NO), a short-lived gaseous messenger molecule, influences vascular health, mitochondrial function, cellular energy balance and immune activity. At low levels, it enhances glucose and fatty acid oxidation stimulating energy production and facilitating mitochondrial biogenesis. At high concentrations it inhibits mitochondrial enzymes shifting metabolism toward glycolysis and impairing ATP production. This dual role allows it to function as a metabolic rheostat. NO is rapidly converted to nitrite and nitrate so measurement of total nitrite plys nitrate is a way to measure overall NO production. Using nitrate reductase to convert nitrate to nitrite allows total nitrite to serve as a direct indicator of NO production. AkrivisBio’s Nitric Oxide Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure nitrite in biological samples, providing an indirect measure of NO in various tissues.
