The NAD/NADH pair are the primary electron acceptor and donor, respectively, in all living organisms. Most energy-related catabolic reactions result in the formation of NADH from NAD. The electrons carried by NADH mainly end up at the electron transport chain and result in the formation of ATP the primary energy molecule. THE NA/NADH ratio is tightly regulated, modulating metabolic fluxes and preventing excessive oxidative or reductive stress in cells. Other than a source of energy, NADH is also involved in DNA repair, signaling pathways and a variety of metabolic functions. Alterations in NADH levels or its metabolism are associated with age-related disorders, neurodegeneration, metabolic diseases, and cancer. AkrivisBio’s PicoSense NADH Assay is a simple, sensitive means of measuring NADH and/or NAD in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity in the very low nanomolar range.
