Mitochondrial Complex I, also known as NADH:ubiquinone oxidoreductase, is the first and largest enzyme complex in the electron transport chain. It plays a key role in cellular respiration, catalyzing the transfer of electrons from NADH to ubiquinone (coenzyme Q), coupled with the translocation of protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane, contributing to the proton gradient that drives ATP synthesis via oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondrial Complex I is a metabolic hub, integrating energy production, redox balance, and signaling. Its dysfunction disrupts bioenergetics and contributes to various pathologies, highlighting its importance in health and disease. Therapeutic strategies targeting Complex I are being explored for metabolic and neurodegenerative disorders. AkrivisBio’s Mitochondrial Complex I Activity Assay is an easy way to monitor Complex I activity in mitochondria with a sensitivity below 0.1 mU.
