Glucose-1-phosphate is an important intermediate in both glycogenesis and glycogenolysis. Various metabolic signals cause either glycogenolysis or glycogenesis. During periods of elevated energy demand, glycogen is utilized, resulting in rate-limiting glucose-1-phosphate release during glycogen utilization. Glucose-1-phosphate is then converted to glucose-6-phosphate, the cellular storage form and enters glycolysis. In glycogenesis, glucose-6-phosphate is converted to glucose-1-phosphate then to UDP-glucose which adds to the growing glycogen chain. Glucose-1-phosphate is ubiquitous, found in virtually all organisms. AkrivisBio’s Glucose-1-phosphate assay is a simple sensitive means of detecting glucose-1-phosphate in a variety of sample types with a sensitivity below 1 µM.
