Creatine Kinase catalyzes the reversible transfer of the high energy phosphate from ATP to creatine. During periods of low energy demand, muscle cells convert ATP to phosphocreatine to store energy since high levels of ATP cannot be stored efficiently. When demand increases, CK reverses the reaction generating large amounts of ATP very quickly. CK is widely expressed in various tissues and cell types, with the highest concentrations in muscle and brain. Increased CK levels is characteristic of several conditions, including traumatic brain injury, stroke, muscular dystrophy and rhabdomyolysis all of which result in elevated blood CK levels. Myocardial infarcts and heart failure cause an increase in a specific CK isozyme (MB) in the blood. AkrivisBio’s Creatine Kinase Activity Assay is a simple, sensitive way to measure creatine kinase activity with sub-mU sensitivity.
