A protease inhibitor with high specificity for HIV-1 protease. Inhibition of HIV-1 protease (responsible for protein cleavage), results in selectively inhibiting the cleavage of HIV gag and gag-pol polyproteins, thereby preventing viral maturation. It has been reported to reduce morbidity and mortality in a retrospective cohort study of SARS-CoV-2 infection and to reduce lung pathology in non-human primates. It was not associated with reduced viral replication or improved clinical outcome in an open-label randomized clinical trial in patients with COVID-19.
