DESCRIPTION

Sodium dichloroacetate is an inhibitor of pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase (PDK). It shows IC₅₀ values of 183 μM and 80 μM for PDK2 and PDK4 respectively. DCA causes apoptosis in cancer cells and inhibits tumor growth. DCA works by targeting the mitochondria of cancer cells. It activates an enzyme called PDK, which in turn leads to the increased activity of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). This metabolic shift promotes mitochondrial function and encourages cancer cells to undergo apoptosis, ultimately inhibiting their growth.
